Re: Springfield Trapdoor Serial Number 28915

Brenda- There is no surviving information for serial number 28915. That is a serial number range where they were making both rifles and carbines, and most of the low number guns were recalled around 1880 and broken up for parts to be used in making updated models and the receivers with the serial numbers were sold as scrap. As a result, many were later used for assembling guns by surplus dealers or others so it is possible you have one of those, not a rifle as originally delivered from Springfield Armory. Values will differ greatly depending on exactly what you have, and the condition. Dick Hosmer is the local expert on the early carbines in this range, but he can probably help out a lot with your gun as well. He will post if he would like photos.
