First of all, the method would be confined to the first model 1873 carbine not the rifle had a rod. No one suggests this method would be used in the heat of battle. That is so unlikely that the participant would have a thong to even consider. The thong method would be used back in camp to salvage a so far was an unserviceable carbine, as mentioned This would apply to the first model 1873 carbines firing a 45-55 Benet primed case. Not very hard to understand. The carbines were probably spoils of war captured at the Rosebud and LBH and being in Indian hands had a fouled bore which contributed to the stuck case. BTW I have you beat by 10 years.
