The "Thong method" of a stuck cartridge case was simple, t only required a thong of leather or cord long enough to go slightly longer than the length of the barrel and of sufficient length to have a good grasp when pulled.
A hole was cut or punched on the face of the stuck case large enough to get the thong thru. The thong would then be knotted at the muzzle and pulled downward acting like a ramrod. This method was used by Indians as well as others for trapdoors, falling block and other single shot actions. After the case was removed the thong would be taken out of the case and be saved for that use again or for some other expedient use. The only clue on a recovered case that this method was used would be the larger hole on the face were the thong was inserted.
