Re: Springfield 45-70

There is nothing to "identify" - it is what you call it, a Model 1873 Springfield, the standard US Army infantry weapon of the period.

However, it is either a mix of parts, or (more likely) there is another digit to the serial number - 22849X. Sometimes the final digit gets defaced by allowing the hammer to smash into the top of the receiver, which is what happens when the trigger is pulled with the breech open. Usually done by kids playing around.
