Hi Charly.. John pretty much hit it on the head with his very nice reply... Also you have to remember that the basic gatling gun model 1874 weighed in at over 200 lbs by itself, not including magazines, yoke, ect. Way to heavy to handle like the Brownings that you speak of. Custer was offered the Model 1866 .50-70 guns, even more heavy than the 1874 model, and a much poorer design. Also mounted on the artillery carriage as Charly mentioned, with no provision for traverse other than to bar the trail of the carriage, left or right. Another few hundred pounds to grunt with.
