Hi Daivid- I am puzzled by your comment about osilaters. Our later day machine guns such as the 1919A4/A6 had no ocilaters so the gunner did this quite sucessfully by using indirect fire for example to walk the rounds into your target(s). I have also seen training movies showing 1917 browning gunners tapping the base of the receiver/trigger group after each burst. I would suspect that a Gatling gunner could achieve quite a nasty effect especially with plunging fire. However I have never fired a Gatling gun and all about that day is just speculation - just my 2 cents.
