Probably even more of a problem that dirt was ver-de-gris (or however you spell it) which formed on the exterior of the copper shell casings when held in a copper belt loop. NCO's had to repeatedly check on the copper rounds the get troopers to routinely clean this green coating off, or at least until Custer and his 5 troops all died at LBH; I'm guessing the news from that provided sufficient incentive to the troops to keep their ammo clean thereafter. Then the woven prairie belts came along, eliminating leather contact with the copper shells, and eventually the brass casings and presto, no extraction problem.
