Sounds like the band from one of the rolling block rifles, definitely not a Springfield Armory part.

If you are installing on a barrel closer to the receiver than normal, then a standard upper band will require the upper part to be filed larger to account for the taper of the barrel, and the stock may require some wood removal as well.

If this were mine, I think I would forget about the upper band and complete the "transition" to a faux fun shooter carbine instead of leaving it in its present non-descript state.
