One of the last operations on the receiver was the numbering. The finished receivers then went into trays on rolling carts which were moved around the shop to the assembly stations. There was NO "assembly line" as we understand the term today. They were pulled at random, or at best on a rough last-in first-out basis. When the guns were assembled they were racked without regard for number. When they were issued they were pulled without regard for number. When shipped, ditto, (this is confirmed by several surviving manifests.
