Thank you all for pointing out the Custer-era carbine--and thanks especially to John for indicating the presence of "story guns" on the Hayes site. I'll paste in a modify-and-paste link to a carbine (???) that interests me:

I have a 10CAV Colt revolver, and although I don't really have the funds to buy another firearm right now, if some of y'all say this carbine looks legitimate, I might buy it anyhow. (In my single volume of SAA serial numbers, the trapdoor in question seems to reside amid a bunch of rifles.)
