Well, firstly, NO .45-70s (Model of 1873 and on) were refitted from muzzleloaders.
However, the earlier .58 and .50 trapdoors (M1865, 1866, 1868, and 1870) were.
There were MANY parts changes over the years, most of which are interchangeable, which poses a problem for the novice collector. I would suggest buying two very inexpensive books, which will answer 100s of questions. The under $50 cost (for both) will be money well spent.
"The .45-70 Springfield" by Poyer, 5th edition. "The .58 and .50 Caliber Rifles and Carbines of Springfield Armory, 1865-1872"
