Unfortunately, you have the remains of a Model 1888 (even though marked 1884) rod-bayonet rifle which was cut down to make a hunting rifle. Hope you did not pay a high price for it.

Your "listing" is absolutely correct - no carbines were made that year (in fact none were made after 1889) and most were 22". An experimental model was made (1,000) in 1885 with a 24" barrel.
