Your band response is of concern - I'm guessing you may be looking at some sort of cutdown rifle stock?

No, the "lockplate" is the part on the right side where the hammer is mounted. For a gun in that range, it should have the date "1873" centered below the word Springfield". Anything else indicates a replacement.

The breechblock should be (and apparently is) marked "Model/1873/eaglehead/crossed arrows/US".
