I never used the 1919 in combat, so we always used the gauge. The tripod was heavy and a pain to carry, so yes, the bipod and handle were a great improvement. I did know about stopping a runaway gun. The M60 wasn't perfect for certain; it would "slow fire" as we discovered one evening on the DMZ if the buffer were oiled, a no-no. At last light I pushed the gunner aside (he didn't know what was happening) and frantically disassembled it and got if functioning again. I was a platoon leader at the time.
