I know that with barrels, one 'backwoods trick' is to ding the threads SLIGHTLY, but, I believe the breech screw is hardened, and that might not be such a good idea with it. If you are getting it past center with your hand, you're probably 1/4" or so away from having it really tight. Normally you need a wrench for the last 90 degrees or so, so yours is pretty loose.

Tinning might work, or I suppose you could make up a "washer" from brass shim stock, that could be trimmed so as not to be visible from the top. It's largely a visual thing - the plug is not going to back out, and the stock would keep it from turning - but you still want it to be at least snug.
