The M60 had its problems as well. On the 1919 you could cheat the headspace adjustment by marking with a punch where the locking spring engaged when the piece was properly headspaced the correct way. The shoulder stock/bipod was great as you could keep lower to the ground then with the tripod. However it is possiblle to get the piece hot enough to start melting the bipod. By then the barrel is a smoothbore but it does enlarge the beaten path/zone. It was quite common to have to twist the belt or links to stop it from cooking off rounds and firing on its own. Did you use the guage or use the headspace on a cartridge method - both outlined in FM 23-45
