GB 504979023 Last of the Springfield Cadets?

Posted by John Shonafelt on Thursday, 3 September 2015, at 1:00 p.m.

Ref : GB Auction # 504979023 Title of G9) Springfield 1873/1884 Trap Door 45-70 I would be interested in experts opinions on this rifle. My initial impression of the rifle when I saw it a few days ago was that was mismatched. The serial number 350300 dates to about 1886, but the stock is obviously 1893. However, i would think a 1893 rifle stock should be cut for a ramrod bayonet and at closer reading of the auction I became aware of the barrel length measurement (29 5/8). This is too short for a standard rifle but just right for a “Cadet” rifle at 29.6”. I do not think any Cadet rifles were fabricated in 1886 but it looks like 5000 were made in 1893. Isn’t 1893 the last year Trapdoor Springfield's were made? I wonder if this Cadet rifle was actually made in 1893 with Springfield using using up their spare parts (hence the early receiver) as they were winding down Trapdoor production? Perhaps some of you with more experience than I know if this kind of mismatch happened?
