Re: band springs

I'll have to admit that I never made a great study of band springs, though the point about pin length has merit - even though that dimension was likely not under rigid control. The pin hole was drilled clear through - possibly to prevent slight differences in pin length from affecting the seating of the spring.

The stock mortises were machine cut, so that any change in cutout dimension involved work on the tooling as well, and the only band springs that I know to be different (externally) from the norm were those slightly shorter ones used on the "miniaturized" 1867 Cadets, of both army (Allin) and navy (Remington) types.
