Re: New title: Long range rifle?

No, sadly, you do not have a "long range rifle", either. Top serial number on those is around 162500 - these were also made in the 1878-1881 period; your s/n is 1892 or so. But, a "minty" late rod-bayonet could well be a fair deal at $1000. Long ranges are closer to $10,000 (at retail, Frank! - GRIN) and Marksman's rifles are in the $30,000 range.

But, I'd go through any guns that are left real carefully!!!!!!

If you find one with a tag marked M1884 (or 1888) rod-bayonet rifle, you just might get a pleasant surprise. Looks like the ID (but perhaps not the price) tags got swapped for some reason, accidental or otherwise.

The special barrel marks on a LR are on the centerline of the barrel just ahead of the V/P - at least that is where they are on mine, but I have one of the ones with a Sharps tang sight and no rear barrel sight at all.
