Re: 1842 Springfield rifle?

The metal would, originally, have been bare ("National Armory Bright") but it could have been painted as a preservative by some later user. This is a huge stretch, and occurred at a somewhat later date, but it is known that some weapons provided to our Indian scouts, etc. were painted.

I also have an 1842,but mine is earlier (1844). It is the ONLY item I've actually acquired through our antique store (which I'd figured would be a good source) in almost ten years of operation.
