Ned, I also have an 1842 Springfield which has an 1847 lock plate and is a 69 caliber smooth bore. It was issued to my great-great grand father in 1862, who was a farmer and went to the defense of the town of New Ulm, Minnesota in August of 1862 during the Sioux uprising. It is not in great shape, but still has several cartouches. It is one of the reasons why I started collecting old firearms. Jim
