1842 Springfield rifle?

Posted by Ned on Wednesday, 29 April 2015, at 11:03 p.m.

I have what I think to be an 1842 rifle which I bought (accidentally, thought I was bidding on a trapdoor!) at an auction in North Dakota. It's good enough to hang on our fireplace mantle, but that's about it. It has a lock plate marked "1847" and no serial number anywhere. I assume that the lock plate was swapped from a muskatoon. The barrel looks to be flame washed around the breech with some deep scoring and is pretty ugly. All of the hardware seems to be present. It seems to be smooth bore. Q: Were some of these rifled? Were any Civil War issue? The barrel is so ugly that I may try to change it out. Does anyone make reproductions, or should I leave it? Thanks, I'm somewhat at a loss about this thing. Ned
