Strange. Any markings on the lockplate? Do you know the difference between a Model 1870 (un-numbered) receiver, and the later .45-70 style? Obviously, I'm thinking "Bannerman, etc." here. Failing that, I'd start looking for a place (military school, etc.) that might have used cadet rifles - such as "McKinley College", or some such. Outside of those two possibilites, am totally mystified.
