1884 Cadet Markings

Posted by Jim Mountain on Thursday, 12 March 2015, at 11:26 a.m.

I have just received a Trapdoor Cadet that appears to be configured as a 1884 model. The barrel and stock measurements are correct. The stock has a stock acceptance stamp just to the rear od the trigger guard, but not acceptance stamp on the left side. The stock has been refinished. The rifle has a third variation Buffington rear sight and it does have sling swivels, although not the one piece trigger guard. My question is about the receiver markings. The original serial number looks to have been removed. The top of the receiver is stamped just ahead of the breech with "Mc K", and the barrel is stamped on top just ahead of the receiver with a "M", and just under the M a three digit number. The barrel has the V, P, and eagle head proofs and an additional P proof on the bottom. I have not been able to track down any information about rifles marked in a like manner. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Jim.
