There is no "Model 1878", rather a too-deeply-struck "Model 1873". But, a rifle with number that high should have a block marked "US/Model/ 1884", strike 1. If the stock is refinished, strike 2. The missing rod-bayonet is approximately a $75-$100 problem - strike 3.

Based on info supplied so far, I would offer him around $400, tops. If he balks, walk away. There are plenty of complete, correct examples - requiring no apologies - of that model around. See classifeds here, or check out www.gunbroker.com.
