Springfield delivered 3,480 Type I rifles to Navy Yards in late 1870 & Jan., 1870, all inspected by the Navy. The Navy recalled 2,178 to sell off to Poultney - the other 1,302 must have been out on ships. Springfield made up this difference for the 10,000 by selling 1,302 Type II rifles to Poultney - today there are uninspected Type II rifles to prove it. The Navy didn't bother to inspect the rifles for sale.
