Re: Trapdoor Carbine Serial Number Check

Posted by Pete on Wednesday, 4 February 2015, at 6:44 p.m., in response to Re: Trapdoor Carbine?, posted by Dick Hosmer on Monday, 26 January 2015, at 11:29 p.m.

This carbine has the serial number of 452,041. Is there any way to check the serial number to see where it might have been issued?

The stock is not a cutdown of a rifle stock and appears to be a replacement with no cartouches. The carbine also has the "C" marked Buffington rear sight. The only strange thing is that the barrel does not have any visible proof marks on the left top side and it has a "1873" marked block rather than one marked "1884". The finish on the metal and wood appear untouched and both have a nice patina. Could the barrel proof marks have been removed during a possible refurbishment during the Spanish American War? Thanks.
