That's a bit strange. 1888s are widely known marked, but the basic format (expressed in a zillion different fonts/sizes/media) is almost always "small number/letter/number of no more than two digits", which is construed as "regiment/company/rack". Yours, I dunno.

For a guy in his twenties, with all of the resources available today, it might be fun to REALLY try and crack that nut - which many people ask about - but it is waaaay past me at this point.
