John, thanks for the info - if I go the epoxy route, something like what you outlined should be the best process, I'm sure. Have had, so far, a couple of offers to make the piece in steel, which really would be the best in a lot of ways. I REALLY appreciate the offers of help from everyone.

Further hurdles: cutting/crowning the junk barrel and reinstalling the front sight, and, bending the sling swivels. I've devised a scraper tool to undercut the rod channel, which is slow but seems to be working.

The gun will never fool anyone, and isn't meant to, just wanted to do something fun with my genuine bayonet, besides sell it off to someone else who would do the same thing.
