Trapdoor Carbine?

Posted by Pete on Monday, 26 January 2015, at 8:36 p.m.

I am currently looking at a trapdoor carbine with a 452,000 serial number and was wondering if it could possibly be a cut down rifle. The carbine has a rear barrel band ring with the 1890 saddle protector and a rear Buffington sight marked "C". The barrel measures 22 inches. There is a trapdoor in the stock which holds the three part cleaning rod. There appears to be no ramrod channel in the front stock. The lock plate is marked "U.S. Springfield". The stock has no cartouches and could be a replacement. The stock also has the saddle ring on the left side. The only weird thing is that the breech block is marked "Model 1873". The metal and wood both have a nice patina so the gun would have not been messed with recently. Any assistance would help. Thanks.
