500+ gr bullets in high arch breech

Posted by keith on Sunday, 25 January 2015, at 6:22 p.m.

Hi all, I'm shooting a 1873 with the high arch bb,narrow receiver and long wristed stock. I have been keeping with the Lee 405g hollow base bullet while trying different loads ,with the goal to shoot this gun in shilloet shoots.I'm getting there. From what I read this is the bullet the rifle was designed for,but I'm wondering if its OK to expand my horizons and regularly shoot a heavier bullet? Once again, from what I've read ,the 500+ g bullet didn't come into use until the breech block and stock wrist had been beefed up. So any opinion on this?I don't want to use them if they will beat the heck out of the old gun. Thanks,Keith
