I assume you refer to the Berdan conversion trapdoor. It was, in fact, chosen as a result of the 1866 Ordnance Trials. But the Allin was put into production to in order to not pay royalties. Then Allin "borrowed" some features of the Berdan to create the M1866, for which Col. Berdan successfully sued the U.S. Gov't.
