Add to the book list: McAulay- U.S. Military Carbines- companion to his rifle volume, and both include official accounts of usage and performance of the arms, and ID some units which used them. Hosmer, The .58 and .50 Caliber Springfield Rifles and Carbines. Great coverage on this neglected niche. Hicks, U.S. Military Firearms- The superb line drawings by Andre Jandot illustrate details and workings in a very easy to understand style, as well as being a pretty comprehensive listing of all but the most exotic experimental models of U.S. arms.
