To expand on Dick's answer. The M1866 rifle musket has a 40 inch barrel, with breech block in the rear, and was not dated when converted to .50 cal. The M1868 barrel of 32.5 inches is serial numbered on the left side, and can be dated approximately by the month that SN was used. The Model 1870 at 32.5 inches was not serial numbered on the left side, but sometimes has numbers on the right, and is not datable. Note that the M1870 Navy was also 32.5 inches, but has a saber lug and a stock recoil block on the bottom of the barrel - it is not datable except by its short period of manufacture.
