I'm with Richard on this one all the way. LEAVE IT ALONE. Write down the history of the piece for future generations. Get really good photos of the "rifle". Assemble it all together in a binder.

If you want a Trapdoor to shoot, they are readily available. Al's listings here are honest examples of the firearm. Be careful buying on the web. Gun shows are an excellent place to find good shooters. The bore is the most important consideration when looking at the TD.
