Very modified 1873, what to do?

Posted by Jeff monck on Thursday, 25 December 2014, at 1:56 p.m.

I now have my fathers .45/70 1873. Sn 267781 that was given to his father by an old Indian ( seriously). Th srifle has been greatly modified and am not sure what it start out as. There ar no barrel bands, the stock has been cut short, the forearm ends just below the forward edge of the rear sight, and it had some generic straight buttplatt at one time, this end cut short also. I am not sure how to measure internal barrel length, with the breech closed a brass rod measured 26 1/4 in. It appears to never had saddle rings. It does shoot well, but with the condition of the stock at the butt, I am now hesitant to shoot it anymore. How do I identifiy what I have and it can be "restored" to some respectable resemblence of a 1873 Springfield trapdoor
