Take a look at the receivers I have for sale. One is 22218 which is only three digits from 12221 which was turned-in after the LBH battle by the 7th Cav. A few years back, SN12221 surfaced as a cadet rifle and then later surfaced as a "real" carbine.

Since SN12218 is so close to SN12221 and since very few SN's in this range are known, there seems to a good chance this number was in the crate with others used at the battle. It is common for serial numbers within a few digits of one another to be found in the same crate.

My theory is based on serial number sequences grouped in lots of 20 guns using Mallory's lists of recorded serial numbers.
