I'd definitely say you have a rifle which was shortened by someone other than Springfield. You are quite correct about no new carbines having been made in 1891. The last run of 5000 was in 1889, with numbers in the 450000 range.
What is muzzle diameter? Should be 0.73"
What is barrel length? Should be 22" exactly.
Describe holes in butt trap. 2 large with connecting slot, or 3 small?
Is there a bar with sliding ring on left side opposite lockplate?
Is triggerguard one milled piece of metal, like one would find on a modern rifles?
Is there any sort of filler or patched cleaning rod hole, or completely replaced piece of wood, at front of stock?
