The "U" is a standard mark for all Springfield barrel bands - it should be on the hammer side of the arm and face towards the muzzle. "U" indicates "up" as the bands are actually tapered.

There would certainly be a market, at least as parts, and possibly the whole thing as a curiousity. Perhaps $400 or so. You might list it on www.gunbroker.com.
