Ernie, unless you know what this symbolism means, you could work yourself to death trying to figure it out. I was hoping that someone had seen the "lettering" and would lead me to the source. The lettering was done after it left military service. I assume the the gun was in military service because of the ring and hook wear on the stock. The two items on the gun that appear to be later modifications are the long tab extractor and the barrel band. Also, the gun has a decent bore which would mean it did not see alot of Indian use.
