Joe, It's not unheard of to have an old cartridge case stuck in the chamber. It mostly occured with the older copper ctgs, when rapid fired the cases would get hot and expand and stick and the extractor would rip it apart. It'd be the first thing I'd look for especially since the exact thing happened to me in one of my rifles when I first went to fire it. I had a gunsmith remove it, the head and rim had torn off and the rest was never removed for who knows how many years. Works great now. Lee
