Dick, I spoke to Warren via face book messaging and sent photo's. Warren says that he thinks the rifle has the date of 1870 on the breech block. I cant see how that could be an accurate assessment when it looked like the date was most certainly 186-. He had a tough time assessing what the last number could've been. It is dirty and he hasn't cleaned it well except with a copper penny to scrape it with upon my recommendation. I looked at a photo of the left side of the barrel and receiver that he sent me and it is either blank or there are two numbers struck twice in the appropriate place and barely legible in the photo. The number or marking appears like it might be a 1. Yes, a 1. At least he and I are speaking after not having contact with each other for about 47 years. I can send the photo to you if you'd like to see it for yourself.
