Kudos to the USMA

Posted by Dick Hosmer on Monday, 25 August 2014, at 12:59 p.m.

I am very pleased to report that civility, courtesy, and above all, resonability, are STILL alive, though not always immediately evident.

Late last Wednesday evening, I sent an email, regarding the 68/68, to the "contact us" address on the website of the Army Museum at West Point. I'm always a bit leery of these on-line forms as they usually do not show as outgoing messages on your own email program, leaving you nothing to trace.

On Thursday morning I had a personal response from a Mr. Michael McAfee, advising that he had turned the matter over to Mr. Les Jensen, the curator. This morning, I had a very nice, very informative, very detailed answer from Mr. Jensen. This is in stark contrast to the treatment of similar requests to SA, who seem to totally ignore them.

The short answer is that the USMA does not have a 68/68, and, so far as they can tell, have only owned one example of an 1868 Rifle, that one being dated 1869, and which was acquired prior to 1890.
