X behind the trigger guard plate

Posted by Jerry Ipsen on Saturday, 16 August 2014, at 12:30 a.m.

While it would be great to have a stock complete with a cartouche it was fun to learn (in reading Poyer & Riesch's book) that the X (amongst other single letters that could be found) was stamped on the stock by the inspector just behind the trigger guard plate and was common for stocks having been replaced. Without the P meant that the rifle and in my case the stock of the carbine had been replaced without reproofing the arm. pg 32
