Well, to start with, there were only about 100 of the Model 1868 trapdoors produced in 1868 and that have the 1868 date on the breechblock. Out of those 100, I'm thinking that there might be less than 10 known in collections... if THAT many. The particular rifle that Dick bought shows very little if any actual wear on it. Their is some storage patina and age on it that accumulated over the past 147 years, but that's all. If one has to have an 1868 dated 1868 Springfield, the rifle that Dick bought would be my choice! It could be rightly said that it was destiny that Dick came upon it when he did. Now his spirit won't be forced to wonder forever between the winds when he takes his final journey. I think that he might even decide to have it buried with him when he's laid into the earth. That way he can have it with him in the next world too.
