Old western movies, and a driving trip which included visits to West Point and the Smithsonian in 1951, the summer I turned 14. I had become fascinated with the action of the breech, and decided I would try to get as many different variations as I possibly could. Back in those days, specimens were just hung up in rows for viewing - none of the multidiscipline, multicultural, multi-textured (and, above all - politically correct) "interpretations" so prevalent in museums today. Who decided that cases of "stuff" were bad?
