Re: Varget as a smokeless propellant for low-power 45-70?

I was told that the bullet was 300 grain and that the Varget powder was 45 grain. The gentleman is an experienced reloader and I have no reason to doubt him. When I got these loads I asked him if he used anything to take up any space between the powder and bullet. He said that the bullet was seated right up to the powder. Either way I will know for sure next week when I get together with Ernie to pull a couple of cartridges apart and weigh both the powder and bullet. I've also been told that an 800 grain bullet for a trap door is an impossibility. If so that would be my error. It may have been a transcription error. Maybe it should have read 500 grain? That too will be cleared up next week when we pull one of the black powder loads and weigh it. When we find out I'll let everyone know. Till then I won't be shooting anything. Thanks for everyone's concern. RB
