If actually hand-carved, I'd have to think they would be a prior owner's initials, since I cannot recall anything similar being reported, nor have I ever seen such myself. "Official" markings - often in the form of 2/B/27 or some such - seem to be confined to the butt-stock (usually on the hammer side) and the comb ahead of the butt-plate tang.

The only exception that comes to mind is that the movie studios sometimes stamped their arms along the forend. Large (and very heavy) markings of "Fox" and "M G M" have been observed.
