Re: 1873 carbine #14124

Posted by Dick Hosmer on Thursday, 24 April 2014, at 6:11 p.m., in response to 1873 carbine #14124, posted by kevin fields on Thursday, 24 April 2014, at 3:22 p.m.

I'm not completely sure that is a real carbine, but am not presently at my data.

The stock has been replaced, since the butt-trap didn't start until around 75000. Carbine stocks were never cut for the combo tool, just the HSE and 3-piece cleaning rods, in two different ways.

Have never seen a combo tool dated other than 1879. Cannot recall seeing a date on either style of HSE, the earliest of which was designed in 1875, and not supplied until 1877.

Color casehardening was not done until WAY after 14xxx.

To top everything off, unless the seller was totally ignorant of what he had, $250 is unreasonably low for a "real" carbine - that is a 1970s price.
