They were threaded in a lathe - I'm not sure how else it could have been done and still maintain the degree of interchangeability that they achieved.

Of course, square threads DO require very precise tool grinding, and a careful eye, as there is little/no margin for error(s) in cutting angle, feed, etc.

Making the matching internal cut on the receiver was even more challenging, but they did it.
